According to multiple entertainment industry sources on the 22nd, the drama Painter of the Night is currently in the process of casting and pre-production, aiming to begin filming in June.
The drama Painter of the Night is based on the webtoon of the same name by author Byeondeok. Set in the Joseon Dynasty, the story revolves around a nobleman, Yoon Seung-ho, who becomes captivated by the spring painting collection of Baek Na-gyeom, a commoner.
It will be produced as a short-form drama, with each episode running around 2 minutes. The project is a joint production by Kidari Studio, Lezhin Entertainment, DUDUNG, and Mongjakso, who hold the IP.
Director Choi Bo-kyung, known for directing Stock Struck and co-directing The Divorce Insurance, will take the helm.
The drama will be rated for viewers 15 and older. However, since the original webtoon is an adult BL, some episodes will be rated for 19+ or restricted to adult viewers.
The original Painter of the Night webtoon began serialization in 2019 on Lezhin Comics and has been a popular series, including four seasons and side stories. It has maintained the top spot in the BL webtoon rankings on Lezhin Comics for five years. Its popularity led to an OST sung by singer Ahn Ye-eun and even the release of a collaboration makgeolli (Korean rice wine).
The platform and release method for the short-form drama Painter of the Night are still under discussion.
