(T/n: Park Chung-hee is Park Geunhye's father. His leadership is polarizing due to his significant role in South Korea’s rapid economic development, often called the “Miracle on the Han River,” alongside his authoritarian rule where he seized power through a coup in 1961 and later ruled as a dictator.)
In a 2005 interview, Gong Yoo named "my father, Michael Jordan, and former President Park Chung-hee" as the men he found most admirable. While the reasons behind his admiration for Park were not elaborated, netizens have criticized his historical awareness, sparking backlash.
His past remarks have resurfaced in light of the recent declaration and subsequent lifting of martial law. President Yoon Suk-yeol's declaration of martial law on the 3rd marked the first instance of such action in 45 years, following the 1979 assassination of Park Chung-hee. At the time, martial law was imposed immediately after the "10.26 Incident," in which President Park was assassinated, and was later expanded nationwide by the new military regime led by Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo on May 17, 1980.
On the night of the 3rd, President Yoon declared martial law in an emergency address, stating, "To protect the Republic of Korea from the threats of North Korean communist forces and to eradicate the pro-North, anti-national forces plundering the freedom and happiness of our people, martial law is being declared to safeguard our liberal constitutional order."
However, within 2.5 hours of the declaration, the National Assembly passed a resolution demanding its termination. Just six hours after the declaration, President Yoon lifted martial law and withdrew the martial law command.
