As the announcement of participants for NHK’s year-end Kōhaku Uta Gassen approaches, there is heightened interest, particularly regarding the involvement of K-pop artists. Last year saw a record number of K-pop performers, with the girl group NewJeans making a special appearance. Attention is now focused on whether NewJeans will participate again this year.

NewJeans debuted in Japan in June with their single album Supernatural, garnering attention with a Tokyo Dome performance. However, due to ongoing controversies surrounding producer Min Heejin’s potential departure from HYBE, the group has been facing disruptions in their activities.

According to a Korean entertainment insider, “There were plans to release new songs in both Korean and Japanese around the Halloween season, but due to the internal conflict between Min Heejin and HYBE, these plans were scrapped. Their appearance on Kōhaku Uta Gassen was likely, combining this new song with their Japan debut track, but now that is uncertain.”

Despite this, there are still positive factors that could support their participation in Kōhaku Uta Gassen. “Supernatural is a Japanese song, and they have not had any major hits in Korea this year, which means they might not be involved in many year-end award shows, freeing up their schedule. Also, the fact that this is their debut year in Japan gives them a valid reason to appear.”

NewJeans is also slated to perform at COUNTDOWN JAPAN 24/25 at Chiba’s Makuhari Messe, suggesting they may already be in Japan around the year-end.

However, a Japanese music industry insider pointed out, “NHK tends to avoid featuring artists who have issues with their management, so it seems unlikely this year. Moreover, the agency itself may not be in a position to actively promote NewJeans, further fueling speculation of their non-appearance.”
