Hanni:

“I don’t understand why I have to go through this, and I don’t know why that person would say such things in a working environment, but this hasn’t happened just once.

I came forward because if I didn’t, it would just quietly pass and be buried. Anyone can experience something like this. Whether it’s seniors, juniors, colleagues, or even current trainees, I came forward hoping that they don’t have to go through this.

Since the early days of my debut, I’ve encountered higher-ups a few times. They’ve never acknowledged our greetings. Living in Korea, I’ve understood that I should be more polite and respectful to elders. I thought it was rude as a person (not to greet back). There’s a certain atmosphere I’ve felt from the company. It’s difficult to describe, but it’s something only those who have experienced it can understand.

I saw people in the company badmouthing NewJeans on the app Blind. I also saw the head of the company’s PR team trying to downplay our debut performance in Japan. Seeing things like that made me realize that it wasn’t just a feeling — I became certain the company dislikes us.

Regarding the ‘ignore her’ incident, they tried to brush it off, saying ‘there’s no evidence, so nothing can be done.’ They mentioned there’s CCTV footage of the greeting. When I explained the situation, I couldn’t understand why only the front part of the footage existed, so I checked the CCTV, and just as they said, only the first 8 seconds were left, while the rest — 5 or 10 minutes later — was gone. There’s evidence that they’re lying. So I asked if I could meet that manager. If it’s a misunderstanding, I think we should clear it up.”


Kim Jooyoung:

Workplace harassment pertains to interactions between HYBE employees, but artists are not considered HYBE employees.

Unfortunately, the claims from both sides are conflicting. I believe Hanni’s side of the story. I too am frustrated and trying to find evidence to prove her claims, but unfortunately, we have not been able to secure any so far.

[theqoo] HANNI'S COMMENT ON BEING A FOREIGNER

"Many Korean people tell me they feel sorry for me having to go through this while abroad, but I met members and staff whom I love like family and have been able to do what I love, so there’s no need to feel sorry."

The people who should truly be sorry are others, and if they are confident they’ve done nothing wrong, they should come forward without hiding. But they keep avoiding the situation, which is so frustrating.

Also, the Australian embassy contacted Hanni’s parents and said they would help if needed, for which she expressed her gratitude.

Kim Jooyoung:
Yes, as the internal director of ADOR at the time, I believe I took all the various measures I could. But seeing that Hanni feels this way and that it has come to this point, I reflect on whether there were parts where I could have done better.
