As NewJeans member Hanni was selected as a witness for the National Assembly's inspection regarding "idol bullying and workplace har**sment," the mothers of the NewJeans members expressed concerns and deep apprehension about HYBE's inadequate investigation and the concealment of CCTV footage.
On the 6th, several mothers of NewJeans members spoke to Ilgan Sports in an interview, claiming that Kim Ju-young, CEO of ADOR, stated that the CCTV footage related to Hanni's bullying had disappeared. They criticized, "How can it be that only the video of Hanni greeting a member from another group remains while the footage containing the problematic 'ignore her' has been deleted?"
Previously, Hanni revealed during a live broadcast on NewJeans on the 11th of last month that while waiting in the hallway of the HYBE building, she greeted another artist. However, when she encountered that artist again, her manager told the group members, "Ignore her," which shocked many.
In relation to this, the National Assembly's Environment and Labor Committee appointed Kim Ju-young, CEO of ADOR and HYBE's Chief Human Resources Officer, as a witness for the National Assembly inspection, along with Hanni as a witness.
A mother of one of the NewJeans members explained, "Initially, Hanni's mother brought this issue up to the other members' mothers around the end of May. She was very upset to hear such things from her child and was worried about how such incidents could happen."
"At that time, in May and June, tensions were high between HYBE and former CEO Min Hee-jin. The ADOR board had also completely changed. Especially since it was an issue involving another label, former CEO Min was effectively isolated on the board, making it difficult to resolve the situation, even while protests were intense. Therefore, we complained to Kim Ju-young, the newly appointed chair of the ADOR board and the overall HR head at HYBE, demanding that this issue be addressed and prevented from happening again. However, time dragged on, and ultimately, we only received a response stating that there was no evidence because the key footage had been deleted."
Another mother of a NewJeans member stated, "It's been four months since the incident occurred. We raised the issue in June, but there has been no sign of resolution, and only now are they saying they will check the CCTV. Initially, they claimed that it couldn't capture voices, so it seemed suspicious that they would check the CCTV." She continued, "I thought it would be better to involve Hnani to specifically identify the parties involved. I was wondering why they were dragging this out unnecessarily. I suggested they check the CCTV, but in the end, we received word that the footage was unavailable."
This mother added, "There were several strange points. We raised this issue right after the incident happened. We have records of it in emails. Yet we received the ridiculous response that the CCTV would be automatically deleted after 30 days. When we asked for it to be restored, they said that technically, recovering deleted footage is difficult."
She continued, "But absurdly, it’s not that all footage from the date of the incident is missing. They only showed us about eight seconds of footage of Hanni greeting another artist, while claiming that the important footage of the artist and the manager coming out afterward was all deleted. It’s ridiculous. Why would they only keep the scenes that don’t matter? It felt disrespectful and unpleasant."
Regarding this situation, another mother of a NewJeans member said, "So when we asked why they deleted just that scene, they said it was deleted by someone who had left the company, so they couldn’t explain why. The security team blamed their superior for the work instructions and confirmation, and the superior pointed fingers at the person who left. It was a mess."
She added, "On the 23rd of last month, CEO Kim Ju-young of ADOR asked to meet with the NewJeans members privately, but we felt too anxious to let just the kids go, so the parents accompanied them. During that meeting, we raised this issue again."
"When CEO Kim said, 'The CCTV footage doesn’t have sound, so it might be difficult for the security team to identify,' I replied, 'Even without sound, can’t you understand the atmosphere, gestures, and context of the situation?' I also suggested that they should have allowed us to view all the footage from that date. They responded that they had already searched a month’s worth of footage. I found that answer ridiculous. I questioned why they were looking for footage from other dates when we specifically mentioned a certain date. I continued to feel that their responses were increasingly strange."
"So when we asked what requests were made to the ADOR board regarding this issue, we requested at least that documentation, but they said it might have been communicated over the phone and that it was difficult to provide details about the work. We questioned how a large corporation could fail to keep records of work requests, insisting that there must be something, and they eventually sent us an email with the information on September 25. However, when I saw that content, I was stunned."
The mother of a NewJeans member explained, "They showed us Slack messages detailing the instructions, but the request process seemed strange. If this is an issue between subsidiary labels, shouldn’t HYBE maintain neutrality in the investigation? Furthermore, wouldn’t it make sense for a department or person within HYBE that deals with workplace harassment to handle this? It is a large corporation, after all. Yet, they were looking for related documents through Belift Lab."
She continued, "The directive to search for this CCTV footage should have been made directly by ADOR to the security team, or through HYBE’s workplace harassment department. Why was the ADOR board asking Belift Lab to find it? This raised even more suspicions. Moreover, the Slack conversation between Belift Lab and the security team included a message where the security officer said, 'We found the footage of them greeting each other,' to which Belift Lab responded, 'That’s a relief.' I couldn’t understand the intent behind saying 'That’s a relief.'"
The mother of a member said, "This is akin to asking the perpetrator to find the evidence. In the end, they claim the footage containing the problematic 'ignore her' scene was deleted, and when we suggested doing a forensic recovery, they said it wasn’t possible due to technical issues. How can we possibly believe any of this?"
She continued, "During the meeting on the 23rd, Hanni explained to CEO Kim Ju-young, 'You said only the victim should verify it, so I visited the security team to check the CCTV, but the security personnel couldn’t even look me in the eyes and their hands were trembling.' In response, Kim Ju-young replied to Hanni, 'Aren't I looking directly at you?' which was very confusing."
She added, "Previously, Kim Ju-young had also told Hanni, 'If something like this happens, you should have spoken up sooner; the footage was deleted after a month.' However, Hanni did speak up early, and we also raised the issue immediately. Given this response, I can only imagine that Hanni might have thought, 'Does this mean I did something wrong?' The mothers were outraged, saying, 'How would Hanni know about such regulations? We raised the issue right after the incident, not a month later.'"
"During the meeting on the 23rd, CEO Kim Ju-young suddenly started crying in front of the NewJeans members while speaking. It was very shocking. For members who lack social experience, to see the CEO, who isn’t even close with them, showing such an emotional reaction while discussing various issues might make the kids feel guilty. Moreover, they were discussing the harm they had suffered. In fact, during that meeting, one member cried and said, 'Why are you making us the bad guys?' and the mothers said, 'You’re at an age where you should be in school, and we’re sorry you have to go through this as parents.'"
Another mother of a NewJeans member mentioned, "During that meeting, I raised the issue of the unauthorized leak of videos from the members' trainee days on online media. Two days later, I received a response from CEO Kim Ju-young saying that (NewJeans) fans had filed a criminal report about the media and Source Music, and that we could consider waiting for the results of that."
She continued, "In the clarification email sent to us by CEO Kim, it mentioned that while the NewJeans members could file a civil lawsuit against the media for invasion of privacy, we also needed to consider that initiating such proceedings against a media outlet could be viewed negatively. It stated that without securing objective evidence of the leak, the chances of success might be low. Additionally, it mentioned that ADOR had sent an official letter to Source Music and the media in August but had received no response."
"It mentioned that invasion of privacy does not have criminal penalties, and even if we sue Source Music, there’s a possibility of it being turned against us if they receive a 'no charge' disposition. Since the fans reported the media and Source Music, it suggested that we could consider waiting for the results. I don’t understand what they mean by saying there are no criminal penalties but to wait for the results of the fans' report. Despite all this, they also said that if we still wanted to proceed with a lawsuit, ADOR would provide the necessary resources for the NewJeans members to do so. I don’t get the logic behind this at all."
