Though they've lost their mother 'Min Hee-jin,' the group NewJeans remains strong.
NewJeans has been nominated for the 'Best K-Pop' category at the MTV Europe Music Awards (MTV EMA) for the second consecutive year.
According to the list of nominees for the '2024 MTV EMA' announced on the 8th (local time), NewJeans is once again in the running. This nomination reaffirms their global status and influence following last year’s recognition.
The group has been actively promoting this year with their double single 'How Sweet' and their debut single in Japan, 'Supernatural.' The songs from these singles have received acclaim from both the public and critics, charting prominently on major domestic and international charts for an extended period. Additionally, NewJeans made headlines in June for being the fastest overseas artist to enter Tokyo Dome (in just 1 year and 11 months) and sold out all tickets for the event. Their performance at the Tokyo Dome garnered enthusiastic responses from local fans and sparked a continuous buzz, creating a wave of popularity that exceeded objective measures.
Their strong presence is further confirmed by recent chart rebounds. Existing songs like 'ETA' are gaining traction through organic word-of-mouth on social media, making a significant impact on the mainstream pop market. Fourteen of NewJeans' songs are currently featured on the Apple Music K-Pop genre chart in the US, a rare feat in the K-Pop scene for tracks that were released quite some time ago.
On Spotify, their rankings are climbing daily. 'ETA' rose eight spots to reach 30th place on the 'Daily Viral Songs US' chart as of October 7. The song re-entered the chart on the 3rd at 79th place and showed a steep upward trend for four consecutive days. Similarly, it re-entered the UK chart at 65th place and peaked at 38th on the 7th. Furthermore, their songs have ranked on Spotify's 'Daily Viral Songs' charts in 13 countries/regions worldwide, including Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, confirming their global popularity.
In Japan, NewJeans’ songs are also consistently well-received. According to the Japan Record Association, 'OMG' and 'Attention' received 'Double Platinum' (200 million cumulative streams) and 'Platinum' (100 million cumulative streams) certifications, respectively, as of August.
With this, NewJeans has achieved two 'Double Platinum' certifications in Japan for 'Ditto' (March 2024) and 'OMG' (August 2024), along with four 'Platinum' certifications for 'Hype Boy' (August 2023), 'ETA' (May 2024), 'Super Shy' (May 2024), and 'Attention' (August 2024).
