The prosecution has requested a 4-year prison sentence for Park, the operator of the YouTube channel "Sojang," known as a"cyber wrecker." Park acknowledged all charges during the trial, stating, "I am deeply reflecting," and even submitted a handwritten letter of reflection.
The Incheon District Court's Criminal Division 11, presided over by Judge Kim Saetbyeol, held the second trial for Park on the morning of the 23rd at around 11:30 AM. She has been indicted on charges of defamation and insult under the Act on Promotion of Information and Communication Network Utilization and Information Protection.
Park appeared in court wearing an all-black outfit and black glasses. When the judge asked if there had been any changes to her name or address, she stood up quickly and replied, "Nothing has changed."
The prosecution outlined the charges against Park, stating, "The defendant insulted the victims on five occasions. By posting false information in videos, she damaged the victims' reputations and interfered with their management activities."
Previously, Sojang produced and disseminated false information about EXO's Suho and aespa's Karina, among others, and gained financial benefits from it. SM Entertainment raised concerns about this.
Park's attorney stated, "The defendant acknowledges all charges. Her actions were not deliberate but rather unintentional, and were not solely for profit." He also mentioned that Park is currently engaged in volunteer work and receiving mental health treatment.
The attorney added, "We are trying to reach a settlement with the victims. We attempted mediation in civil court, but have faced difficulties in reaching an agreement. We are committed to trying to settle until the end."
The attorney requested, "Please grant a generous amount of time before the sentencing date. she have a surgery scheduled in mid-November." When the judge asked if this would hinder her attendance, Park replied, "No, it won't."
The prosecution requested the court to impose a 4-year prison sentence on Park and to order the forfeiture of 211,421,152 won ($153K). They pointed out, "She actively produced false videos."
They emphasized, "She earned 200 million won in profits ($144K), operated a paid membership system, and continuously targeted the victims' appearance, character, and relationships."
The attorney stated, "The defendant has been making efforts to have a positive impact on society through volunteer work since this incident. She is committed to doing everything possible for the victims' recovery and asks for the utmost leniency."
Park began to read her letter of reflection. "I sincerely apologize to the victims for causing them great harm, and I am deeply reflecting on my actions," she said, bowing her head. "I have looked at myself objectively and regret having caused them such pain."
She added, "Feelings of guilt and pessimism have never left me. I wanted to contribute positively to society, even if just a little, and be someone who is needed." She mentioned that through volunteer work, she gained positive energy by interacting with people rather than just through the internet.
Finally, she expressed, "I think I lost my ability to judge because I was trapped in my own world, including the internet. I will live with a sense of responsibility from now on. I am genuinely remorseful for what happened."
After the trial, when reporters asked Park how she felt about the prosecution's request for a 4-year sentence, she avoided answering. The attorney also responded, "What was stated in court was everything."
Park is also involved in a defamation lawsuit filed by Jang Wonyoung and Starship Entertainment for damages. She has faced charges of defamation against Kang Daniel as well, receiving a sentence of 10 million won ($7.2K) in the first trial last month.
Meanwhile, the sentencing date for Sojang is set for December 18.
