Back in 2nd gen there were so many more variety shows for idols to not just guest in but also to star in as main hosts, i.e. x-man, star golden bell, heroes, invincible youth, etc. It was a great way for the public to get more familiar and know more about idols. Also a great way to expand into other entertainment fields such as variety shows, acting, hosting etc.
In the current era, thats been happening less and less. The most common promotion these days are amazing Saturday. Rarely do you get multiple cross-group promotions. Maybe a few observation shows like the manager here or there but those shows simply dont exist anymore.
Maybe this doesn't matter for younger and i-fans, but for the domestic general public, the easiest way to get to know idols is to simply turn on the tv and see them promoting on shows. The current ways of promotion on youtube alcohol shows where people have to actively click on your episode is mostly only limited to existing fans, rather than casual public.
This also correlates to why nowadays theres fewer and fewer variety idols and acting idols, and hosting roles from 3rd gen and i suspect it will only get worse for 4th gen. The public do not know their names, theres fewer recognizable faces that make them desirable to pd's.
