Nearly half of U.S. Gen Z prefer content about mental connection and friendship over physical love, according to a new study. UCLA's Scholar-Storytellers Center surveyed 1,500 young adults aged 13 to 24 in August and found that 51.5 percent of respondents would rather watch content that focuses on platonic rather than erotic relationships between men and women.

47.5% of respondents said that s*x scenes in movies and TV shows are unnecessary, and 44.3% said that romance is overemphasized in the media. In addition, 39% of respondents said they would like to see more non-s*xualized characters in content.

"This shows that young people want to see more types of relationships reflected in media than just male-female love," said Dr. Yalda Uhls. "Storytellers have used male-female love and s*x as the primary means of creating characters, but they need to recognize that young people want stories that reflect the many facets of human relationships."

The researchers refer to this tendency among Gen Z as "nomance," meaning they don't want romance, and suggest that isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced their tendency to value emotional connection.

The UK's The Guardian commented that the findings reflect the trend of Gen Z having less s*x. According to a 2021 study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), only 30% of teens said they had had s*x at least once, a significant drop from 38% in 2019. Prior to that, the percentage of U.S. teens who had had s*x was often over 50%.

The report also analyzed the different inclinations of today's teens when it comes to content. It found that 90% of respondents disliked content about aspirations for wealth and fame, and preferred uplifting stories about overcoming adversity.

1. I severely agree. I stopped watching Hospital Playlist as soon as the doctors started dating each other. I even bought the OST CDs before that..

3 But the s*x scenes in American movies and dramas are really random. They sleep with every person without adding anything to the story

4. Same for Korean dramas. The romance isn't the main plot but as soon as they add romance to the story, it's no longer fun.. I just wish that more works would get rid of the romance
