[theqoo] 'DUI' SHIN HYE-SUNG APPEALS "PSYCHOLOGICAL PAIN FOR 2 YEARS... I'M SORRY, I WON'T DO IT AGAIN"

Group Shinhwa's Shin Hye-sung (Jung Pil-kyo, 44) was sentenced to two years in prison in his first trial for drunk driving and illegal use of a motor vehicle, saying, "I'm sorry. I won't do it again," while apologizing.

On the morning of the 6th, the prosecution asked for two years in prison during the first trial for drunk driving and illegal use of a motor vehicle at the Dongbu District Court Criminal Division 4 in Seoul.

Shin appeared in court wearing a black hat and mask, and only said "I'm sorry" to reporters' questions.

Shin's defense attorney said, "The defendant has suffered from airport anxiety, publicity phobia, and depression during his 25 years as a member of the idol group Shinhwa. His symptoms became severe from the beginning of 2021. During this period, he did not drink alcohol, and his acquaintances were worried because they could not get in touch with him," the defense said.

"For two years, he suffered from serious formal difficulties and did not seek treatment for fear of being publicized. On the day of the incident, he had a meal with acquaintances he hadn't seen in 13 years, and when he started drinking alcohol for the first time in years, he blacked out and he couldn't think straight. He did something wrong, but it was unexpected and he is not a habitual drunk driver," said the defense attorney.

The defense also said, "The defendant was drunk and mistook the vehicle for his own. He did not intend to use someone else's vehicle without permission in the first place. There was an amicable settlement with the owner of the vehicle, and the owner stated that he did not want to be punished."

The defense attorney further appealed saying ,"He also admits that he didn't take a breathalyzer test. He was asleep in the car and panicked, so he didn't take the test." "After he sobered up, he cooperated with the investigation. Of course, he wish the defendant hadn't driven drunk, but it wasn't his intention to do so in the first place, and he hopes you will consider that there was no physical damage, that the defendant admitted his wrongdoing, and that there is a low risk of recurrence." 

Consequently, Shin Hye-sung said, "I should have always been an exemplary person, and I am sorry that I disappointed and hurt so many people through this incident. I will always promise to never do it again."
